If you’ve spent all year wanting to explore some of South Africa’s magnificent national parks, now’s your chance.

SANParks Free Week is back, and from September 9 to 13, South Africans will have the opportunity to visit national parks across the country without paying an entry fee.

This year’s event, the 19th of its kind, is set to be even more exciting, with selected parks extending free access through the weekend of September 14 and 15.

The week will be officially launched with a special event at Marakele National Park on September 8, kicking off a celebration of our country’s natural beauty.

Thanks to the support of partners like TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa and FNB, SANParks Free Week continues to open up the wonders of our national parks to everyone. It’s a chance to experience the richness of South Africa’s wildlife and landscapes while fostering a deeper appreciation for conservation efforts.

The Significance of SA National Parks Week

Launched in 2006, SA National Parks Week was established to encourage all South Africans to visit and enjoy the country’s national parks. The initiative was designed to break down financial barriers and make these beautiful spaces accessible to everyone. Over the years, the event has grown significantly, drawing in thousands of visitors who might not otherwise have had the chance to experience these natural wonders.

Beyond offering free entry, the week serves as an important reminder of the value of conservation.

It provides an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the efforts being made to protect South Africa’s natural heritage and the role we all play in ensuring these areas remain pristine for future generations.

Who Can Enjoy Free Access?

SA National Parks Week is open to all South African citizens. All you need to do to gain entry is present a valid South African ID, driver’s license, or birth certificate at the entrance. The free access applies to day visitors only, making it the perfect opportunity for a family outing or a solo adventure into nature.

While the entry fee is waived, other costs such as accommodation, guided tours, or additional activities are not included. It’s a good idea to plan ahead and consider any extra expenses that might come up during your visit.

Explore the Rivers and Dams

Mpumalanga is blessed with stunning rivers and dams, perfect for water-based activities and for simply lounging about.

You can take a leisurely boat cruise on the Blyde River, go fishing for bass or carp, or simply relax on the banks and soak up the sun.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at white-water rafting or kayaking on the Sabie River. And for a truly unique experience, book a sunset cruise on one of the province’s dams.

If you want to keep things really laid back, then a morning spent picnicking next to a dam such as Witklip will cost you nothing.

Sip a Beer in Sabie (or Pilgrims)

Sabie is one of the best places to travel to in the Spring. There is nothing like that mountain air to clear the cobwebs, and since Sabie is home to a number of exceptional local breweries and bars, complete with exceptional views, a Saturday morning spent supping something delicious is a must.

And if you are in the area anyway, then why not take a step back in time and experience the odd-world charm and oddities of Pilgrim’s Rest. This historic village is a living museum, with restored buildings, quaint shops, and friendly locals.

You can take a guided tour, pan for gold, or simply wander the streets and soak up the atmosphere. While here you can also indulge in some delicious local cuisine at one of the many restaurants and pubs.

Adrenaline Junkie Activities

Mpumalanga is a playground for adventure seekers. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, there’s no shortage of activities to choose from.

Try your hand at zip lining, bungee jumping, or white-water rafting. For something a little different, go quad biking or horse riding through the stunning countryside (Kaapsehoop is an especially beautiful place to go horseback riding during the spring).
