Nelspruit is a bustling town known for its scenic beauty, its sort of close-knit community life, and its markets!

Among its many attractions, the local markets, which in recent years have become a real hit in the community, are a hub of culture, creativity, and commerce. These markets are home to some of the town’s most interesting people, most of whom are talented artisans, making these markets a must-visit for locals and tourists alike.

South Africa is home to plenty of famous markets, especially in the bigger cities, and as such, Nelspruit’s markets, and those in the area around our town, are somewhat forgotten and left out of publications that highlight these monthly or weekly events.

But what sets Nelspruit’s markets apart from the rest are the unique finds and memorable experiences they provide. From handmade local crafts, such as plant pots, and toys, to the most incredible foods and preserves that are such an important part of our local culture, these markets are a treasure trove of things to buy as well as the perfect opportunity to meet the locals.

The lively atmosphere of the most popular markets in Nelspruit is often accompanied by live music performances, creating a festive and engaging environment for all who visit.

A market becomes “trendy” through a combination of factors.

For our purposes, it’s the presence of locally-made crafts that tell a story of the area, the availability of high-quality artisanal foods that offer a taste of the local cuisine, and the inclusion of live entertainment that brings the community together. These elements not only attract a like-minded crowd but also create a sense of community and cultural appreciation.

Whether you’re in search of a one-of-a-kind souvenir, a delicious treat, or simply a fun day out, Nelspruit’s markets have something special to offer, and when you are next staying at our Nelspruit accommodation, make sure that you check out these markets in 2024.

The Must-Visit Markets (in and around Nelspruit) of 2024

  • The Market @ Friend’s Café

It started out before the COVID lockdowns as the I Love Local Market and has quickly become a beloved favourite and grown beyond the confines of the Crossing Spar Centre.

Now hosted every last Sunday of the month (conveniently after payday!) the Market @ Friend’s Café is a smorgasbord for the eyes, and the wallet. Nothing overpriced, everything high quality, and nothing “made in China”, under the eye of its founder Peta de Wet, this market is a champion for small businesses and one of the few social places you can bring your (well-behaved) pet.

  • Mbombela Farmer’s Market

Its hip, its jiving, and it is just where you want to be on the first Saturday of the month. This market is the self-proclaimed trendiest market in Mbombela and those who attend it can’t help but feel a whole lot of love.

At this market, you can look forward to a family vibe and after you’ve done some shopping, you can sit down under the trees and have a picnic. This is because the market takes place in the Lowveld Botanical Garden.

The festivities begin at 10 am and carry on until late, with lots to do, see and shop in between. Stock up on delectable locally grown and locally made foods, sit down and enjoy some arts and crafts, and just enjoy being out in nature for a moment.

  • The Sunday Market at Sonpark

The Sunday Market at Sonpark takes place at Sonpark Shopping Centre (which just happens to be a very short walk away from Nelspruit Lodge), on the second Sunday of the month. Not only does it attract some of Nelspruit’s tastiest and most talented local people and businesses.

This market is all about sitting down, tucking into something delicious and enjoying the music. The market has a cosy sitting area and at each market, shoppers get serenaded by a talented local musician.

  • The Kaapsche Hoop Village Market

Miz Gooz Berry, Kaapsehoop’s very own confectioner, launched the Kaapsche Hoop Village Market a few years back and it has become a real hit. Sometimes under the cover of a misty day and other times in glorious sunlight, the market is something to look forward to, especially if you have a sweet tooth.

All the products at this market are made by hand, here in Mpumalanga, so you won’t find a factory-made product. All of the stall holders are local and each has made what they sell; you won’t find representatives here either.

The stalls are all unique, as stall holders who sell something similar are rotated to give everyone a chance. So you never know what goodies you might stumble upon.

Check out the Miz Gooz Berry Facebook page to see upcoming market dates.

  • The Casterbridge Book Market (in White River)

This fairly new event happens on the second last Saturday of every month and it is a must for book lovers. The market is rather quiet as it is still finding its feet in the community, but if you are looking for cheap books and some rare finds, your Saturday morning will be well spent rummaging here.
