The stunning Lowveld winter has finally arrived, after what certainly feels like an extra long summer, and if you are travelling to our corner of the world for the upcoming June/July school holidays, you are going to need to be fully prepared for our unique winter season.Â
Compared to Johannesburg and any other place on the Highveld, our winters are nowhere near as cold, but that doesn’t mean that while travelling you can’t do with a couple of tips to make the experience as pleasant as possible.
At Nelspruit Lodge, our airy and stunning accommodation is made for the summer months, but that isn’t to say that during the winter you will get cold. To help you make the most of your time here, and especially if you plan to spend some of your holidays outdoors at Innibos, here are a couple of tips that you can keep in mind.
- Pack for cold
Our days might be full of warm sunshine, but in the evenings, the temperatures tend to plunge and so if you intend to spend some time outdoors, maybe at an Innibos show, you should pack warm. Jeggings or jeans, thick and comfortable boots, and a big jacket, are all essential when outdoors at night, and during the day, a light jersey with jeans and boots or sneakers are enough to stay warm.Â
Mornings can also be quite cold, so you can think about layering your clothing so that you can strip off as you get warm.Â
- Choose sunny accommodationÂ
One of the greatest things about winter in the Lowveld is that you can spend loads of time in the sun, something you can’t or perhaps wouldn’t want to do during the spring and summer months.Â
Sunny accommodation, where you can spend some of your day sitting out on a lawn, enjoying the sun rays, is something to consider when you are choosing a place to stay in Nelspruit.Â
- Plan for some local tripsÂ
There are some places around Nelspruit that are absolutely magical during the winter months. Places like Sabie and Kaapsehoop, even nearby Lydenburg and Long Tom Pass, are sometimes best explored at this time of the year. These destinations are far colder than Nelspruit, but that is a part of the appeal. Nothing is quite as wonderful as settling down to a hot cup of chocolate or a coffee in Sabie before heading to a waterfall, or going for a hike. With the cold comes the dry weather, so getting out and about is a must if you want to take on a hiking trail without having to fight through the vegetation.
Keep in mind that many others will also be travelling to the area at this time of year, so be sure to book your Nelspruit accommodation as soon as you can so that you don’t miss out on having a wonderful winter getaway.Â
