Winter arrived in all her frigid glory in July, complete with snowfall on the mountains surrounding the city, something that is exceptionally rare and according to rumours last happened almost 40 years ago.

The winter months are extra beautiful around here.

The days are golden and yellow, as the landscape changes colour and the winter sunshine paints everything with its bright glow. The air has a biting coldness to it in the mornings and in the evenings, and the days turn decidedly icy whenever a cold front comes over, even more so if it is accompanied by a quick shower of rain.

But a Lowveld holiday during the winter time is something extra special. The days are much more comfortable compared to those of the summer months. This makes things like hiking and exploring scenic routes a lot more pleasant and enjoyable.

While you are staying at Nelspruit Lodge during your winter holiday, you will be close enough to various incredible attractions that are in many cases best seen in winter. And during your day trips, you will more than likely be looking for a spot to warm up, in which case we have some options for you to consider.

Hops Hollow, Long Tom Pass

If you are touring Sabie, Graskop, Pilgrims Rest or Lydenburg, you will be close to Hops Hollow, where a roaring fire is always being stoked. There is a bevy of delicious locally made beverages, including exceptional craft beers, to enjoy and the menu here is also quite impressive. The grounds of the Hollow are also quite picturesque and there is also the option of hiking up the mountain side to enjoy the best, albeit chilly, views.

Salvador’s, Kaapsehoop

Salvador’s, up in the quaint and friendly village of Kaapsehoop, just 30 minutes outside of Nelspruit, is popular among locals and visitors alike for its laid back vibe, its scrumptious menu, and its fire place. After a morning of hiking along the escarpment or picnicking, the best way to put some warmth back into your bones is to order a glass of whisky or a cup of coffee, and to find a place next to the fire. Not only will you be warmer, but you can share the space with a friendly community of people.

Old Quarry Smoke House, Uitkyk

Fires, an open plan setting, and a collection of meals on the menu that are guaranteed to satisfy all cravings, the Old Quarry Smoke House is a great place to end your day of gallivanting. The Smoke House moved up to our town from Durban, and has become a hit. The restaurant is the perfect place to wind down and although it has a setup that is more suitable for summer, it can be rather warm in winter when the sun shines in.

If you are looking for a wonderful winter escape, book your stay at Nelspruit Lodge. We have the cosy setting and the welcoming atmosphere that will make your holiday one to remember.
